Case studies

Over the course of the project ten case studies were carried out. The object of the case studies were works of art drawn from the collections of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, the Espace multimédia gantner, Bourogne (Territoire der Belfort), the Haus für elektronische Künste Basel, the FRAC Alsace, Sélestat, and the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de la Ville de Strasbourg.


At the Haute École des Arts du Rhin / École supérieure des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg a seminar was held on the theme of digital obsolescence and its effects on artistic practice. The Hochschule der Künste Bern / the Projekt Aktive Archive participated in the project publication by way of theoretical reflections on the current developments in the theory and teaching of conservation.


The project exhibition Digital Art Works. The Challenges of Conservation presented the results of the project's case studies. These were shown at the following locations:

The project's activities are documented in the publication (Bernhard Serexhe (ed.), Preservation of Digital Art: Theory and Practice. The digital art conservation project, Ambra V, Vienna, 2013), including the papers presented in the symposia, the exhibition and the courses. The publication also includes a comprehensive presentation of the results of the case studies. In addition, the publication collects new contributions dealing with collecting, exhibiting and the conserving digital art.
